A failing clear coat does more damage than most people realize. Once it starts peeling and flaking, the wood underneath is fully exposed to sun, moisture, and everything else the elements throw at it. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a wood garage door with a clear coat that had given up, leaving patchy, bare sections across the face of the door.

We started from scratch. Full strip, full sand. No shortcuts. The goal was to get down to clean, fresh wood before putting anything new on it. Skipping that step is how you end up with new finish peeling off old finish - which just means doing the whole job again in a year or two.

Once the surface was properly prepped, we applied a fresh stain followed by a high-quality oil clear coat. The oil formula is worth calling out - it penetrates the wood rather than just sitting on top of it. That means better protection against UV and moisture, and a finish that holds up significantly longer than a standard water-based topcoat.

The grain on this door is genuinely beautiful, and the finished result lets that show. Deep, warm tone across every plank with a consistent sheen that ties the whole front of the home together. This is what a wood garage door is supposed to look like. It's also now protected the way it should be.

Wood surfaces on the exterior of a home take a beating over time. The good news is that most of them - doors, trim, siding - can be brought back without replacement if you catch them before the damage goes too deep. Stripping, sanding, staining, and sealing is the process, and when it's done right, you get years of protection and a finish that looks this good.
